USL MATCH RECAP | Portland Timbers 2: 1, Seattle Sounders FC 2: 2

T2, Tuiloma vs. Seattle Sounders FC 2 - Aug. 17, 2017

PORTLAND, Ore. – Playing the final game of a two-match home stand, T2 fell 2-1 to Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Providence Park on Thursday night.

Down a goal in the second half, T2 (2-18-3, 9pts) equalized in the 62nd minute when midfielder Jack Barmby delivered an in-swinging ball from a corner kick that picked out midfielder Bill Tuiloma, whose looping header beat the outstretched arm of S2 goalkeeper Tyler Miller and found the top right corner of the net. The goal marked the first of the season for Tuiloma.

Seattle (9-13-2, 29pts) scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute when forward Henry Wingo cut inside from the left wing and curled his shot past Wade Hamilton into the far corner of the net.

Portland, which held a 20-14 shot advantage in the match, created a number of late chances searching for the equalizer. In the 86th minute, Barmby picked out Tuiloma from a corner kick, and his strong header flashed inches past the near post. Barmby, who had a game-high six chances created, swiveled past two defenders near the left end line and delivered a dangerous cross into the box that picked out forward Russell Cicerone, whose lunging effort was redirected over the crossbar in the 91st minute. Just before the full-time whistle, Barmby’s service on the edge of the box found midfielder Villyan Bijev, whose header was directed into the arms of Miller in the 93rd minute.

Seattle opened the scoring in the 58th minute when midfielder Zach Mathers' delivery from a free kick on the right edge of the penalty area picked out defender Sam Rogers, whose header found the back of the net.

Portland nearly equalized in the 64th minute when Cicerone delivered an excellent cross into the six-yard box that found forward Augustine Williams, whose diving header was parried away by Miller in the 64th minute.

Holding an 11-6 shot advantage in the first half, T2 created a number of scoring opportunities. From a free-kick attempt from the edge of the 18-yard box in the eighth minute, Tuiloma’s effort went up and over the wall and was caught by Miller. Attacking down the left wing, defender Kyle Bjornethun sent in a cross that found midfielder Bijev on the left edge of the six-yard box, and his left-footed shot hit the near post in the ninth minute. Two minutes later, Cicerone capitalized on a turnover by a Seattle defender and fired a shot from close range that Miller saved in the 11th minute.

In space from 25-yards out, Barmby blasted his left-footed effort inches wide of the far post in the 22nd minute. Cutting inside on the right wing, Cicerone laid the ball off to Bijev at the top of the 18-yard box. Taking a touch, Bijev placed his left-footed effort wide of the far post in the 27th minute. Four minutes later, Barmby tried to catch Miller cheating to his right on a free kick attempt on the right wing from about 25-yards out, but his left-footed effort went wide of the target. Another free kick opportunity saw Barmby deliver a curing shot over the Seattle wall to force Miller into a save in the 35th minute.

Next up, T2 will travel to face San Antonio FC at Toyota Field on Saturday, Aug. 26; kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (Pacific)

Postgame Quote Sheet
T2 head coach Andrew Gregor
On his overall thoughts on the match…
“It’s a disappointing result for sure, especially against one of our rivals. It was a hard game for both teams. There wasn’t a ton of great play in the game. There were moments, but it came down to those moments to step up and make plays. Seattle made plays at the right times in both boxes, whether getting on the end of something or stopping us from scoring a goal in our end. You’ve got to give them credit that they did that and we didn’t take advantage of those chances.”

On the T2’s equalizer in the second half and the chances created…
“It was a good ball into the box. Bill [Tuiloma] rose and got on the end of it and gave us some life. We created some opportunities and didn’t take those moments, especially early on in the game as well. I thought the first 15 minutes we were all over them and had good moments, especially on the service.”
