PORTLAND, Ore. – As the Portland Timbers kicked off their 2026 campaign Saturday night with a 3-2 victory against the Columbus Crew at Providence Park, the evening marked the 100th year of the historic stadium.

A generational symbol of civic pride, Providence Park has played host to some of the region’s most memorable sporting and entertainment events and has served as the cherished home to Portland’s professional soccer for 50 years.

But that wasn’t the only milestone for the evening.

Midfielder and captain Diego Chara made his 400th career start – the most ever for a field player with one club in MLS history. His appearance was his regular-season all-time 427th for the Timbers and it also marked his 16th season with Portland which is also the most seasons for a player with one team in league history.

Chara recognized by team before game

Chara's heroic tracking back led to late goal

On Saturday, Chara was, as he has for all of his time here, everywhere: breaking up opponent play, calmly controlling the ball, distributing passes to teammates and helping direct the team's flow.

In the 87th minute, he raced back some 70 yards into his own end to help prevent a Columbus counter. Once back in control of the ball, it was Chara's calm control that helped begin Portland's run back upfield, ultimately leading to Ariel Lassiter's game-winning goal in the 88th minute.

Saturday was also an historic night for the team

Also of note: After joining MLS in 2011, Saturday night’s match was the Timbers’ 500th game in Major League Soccer and their 250th at home. All-time, Portland has a 132-51-67 record at Providence Park.
