About artist Taylor Dean and the scarf
The scarf design was created by Portland artist and Puyallap citizen Taylor Dean. Dean says the design inspiration features, "Three keystone aspects of Coast Salish culture: salmon (the animal which gives us life and in return we have a sacred duty to protect), water (which serves as a home to our food and a transportation system), and singing (which is fundamental to ceremonies and cultural events)."
Dean works at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board as an outreach specialist, providing designs for tribal public health promotion. Their artistic style is rooted in the traditions of Coast Salish wood carving, ancient Coast Salish pictographs and petroglyphs, and Coast Salish blanket and basket weaving via which Dean investigates personal narratives, connects with culture, and shows an appreciation for the natural world.
