MATCH RECAP | Portland Timbers 1, LA Galaxy 1

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers extended their unbeaten streak to seven games as they drew 1-1 with the LA Galaxy Saturday at a sold out Providence Park in downtown Portland.

Portland midfielder Diego Valeri scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season with a penalty kick in the 57th minute to pull the Timbers level following LA's first half goal from Chris Pontius.

Match Moments

4' - CHANCE (POR) - Diego Chara, holding possession in the midfield, threaded a pass through three Galaxy players to connect with Andrés Flores on his left. Flores went in on goal but his shot was saved by LA's goalkeeper David Bingham.

11' - CHANCE (LA) - The Galaxy, working the right side, came down with Emmanuel Boateng on the ball. His cross into the middle deflected off of forward Chris Pontius, hit the right post, and went out.

20' - GOAL (LA) - The Galaxy got on the board first as Boateng slipped a pass forward to Pontius near the top of the box. Pontius turned and hit a low show past a diving Jeff Attinella into the bottom right corner of the net for a 1-0 LA lead.

22' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland nearly tied it moments later as Chara carried forward, combined with Sebastián Blanco on a give-and-go before firing a point blank shot on target that Bingham parried away.

28' - CHANCE (POR) - On a Timbers attack forward, Bill Tuiloma sprung Chara on the right flank. Chara lofted a cross back into the top of the LA box that Diego Valeri headed on frame but Bingham made the save.

50' - CHANCE (POR) - Valeri sent in a free kick from about 25 yards out that found Tuiloma on the back post. Tuiloma headed it on target but right at Bingham.

57' - GOAL (POR) - The Timbers tied it up in the 57th minute as Valeri converted a penalty kick when he hammered his attempt into the upper left corner to even the score at 1-1. The penalty was awarded after Flores had made a clever run forward into space. Blanco fed him the ball as he went into the box, Flores got a touch before being knocked over by Galaxy defender Jørgen Skjelvik. Referee Alan Kelly immediately pointed to the spot.

83' - CHANCE (POR) - Following a Timbers corner, the ball found Fanendo Adi on the top left corner of the 18-yard box. He lofted a cross to the back post that Tuiloma leapt to head towards goal and force a diving stop from Bingham.

The Timbers open their 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open campaign on Wednesday, June 6 as they host the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park (7:30pm PT). They'll return to MLS play on Saturday, June 9 at Providence Park against Sporting Kansas City (7:30pm PT, ROOT SPORTS).
