The Portland Timbers, in partnership with JELD-WEN Windows & Doors, will host their fourth-annual tree planting Dec. 7 to celebrate the Stand Together program “Score a Goal, Plant a Tree.” For each goal the Timbers scored during the 2013 season, a tree will be planted in the Portland community with pillar partner Friends of Trees.
Since their inaugural MLS season in 2011, the Timbers have held a yearly tree planting dedicated to the goals scored each season. Timber Joey, Timbers players, front office staff, Community Ambassadors, Timbers Army members and fans have come together and, to date, have planted 2,000 trees. This year, the planting will take place in the Brentwood-Darlington, Mt. Scott-Arleta, Woodstock, Brooklyn, Sellwood-Moreland & Eastmoreland neighborhoods as well as the Buckman, Hosford-Abernethy & Richmond neighborhoods. Be sure to register now and come celebrate the season alongside other Timbers supporters.
The Timbers and JELD-WEN Windows & Doors recognize that planting trees is one of many ways to continue the journey towards a more sustainable environment and are committed to increasing sustainability efforts across all aspects of the club. Through Stand Together, the clubs has planted more than 2,000 trees and shrubs with Friends of Trees since 2011. These plants absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 96,000 pounds a year, remove 360,000 pounds of pollutants each year and intercept 4,760,000 gallons of storm water runoff to keep our rivers clean.
Stand Together represents the relationship between the Timbers and their fans and signifies the strong commitment we have to supporting and standing by our community both on and off the field.
The mission of Friends of Trees is to increase tree canopy within the city limits, restore green spaces and build community. To learn more about the Stand Together and Friends of Trees partnership, please visit http://www.portlandtimbers.com/stand-together/pillar-partners.
