PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers will hit the road to conduct community events and a youth soccer clinic in Warrenton, Ore., as part of their sixth-annual “Rose City Road Trip” presented by Providence Health & Services.
Beginning on Monday, Aug. 14, Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe, midfielder/defender Lawrence Olum, defender Roy Miller and Timber Joey will begin the day with a hospital visit from 9-10 a.m. (Pacific), spending time getting to know patients at Providence Seaside Hospital before heading to Warrenton Grade School from 10:30 a.m.-12 noon (Pacific) to help install “buddy benches,” a project invented by 10-year-old Christian Bucks, that gives children a safe, non-judgmental place to retreat.
The day continues with a youth soccer clinic being led by the Timbers youth development staff for children ages 5-13. Set to run from 1:30-3:30 p.m. (Pacific) at Warrenton Field (NW Ride, Hammond, OR 97121), the clinic will feature a training session, along with an autograph and Q&A session. The clinic is free and open to the public, and participants must pre-register online at www.timbers.com/rosecityroadtrip.
“We are excited to welcome the Timbers ‘Rose City Road Trip’ to the north coast to help us promote healthy activities for kids in our communities,” said Kendall Sawa, RN, chief executive, Providence Seaside Hospital.
“We have been partnering with Way to Wellville Clatsop and other organizations to fight childhood obesity in our county. Getting kids involved in sports and other physical activities is key to promoting healthy habits for a lifetime,” said Dominique Greco, M.D, who practices family medicine at Providence Medical Group-Seaside and in her spare time has volunteered as a soccer coach.
Closing out the visit, players and Timber Joey will join fans at Fort George Brewery (1483 Duane St., Astoria, OR, 97103) for a Q&A, raffle, autographs and pictures from 4:30-6:30 p.m. (Pacific) before returning to Portland.
In previous years, the Timbers have visited Klamath Falls, Salem, Eugene/Springfield, Bend, Hood River, Astoria, Medford, Pendleton, Coos Bay, The Dalles, Corvallis and Vancouver, Wash.
