City of Roses Disposal & Recycling and Providence Park aim for Zero Waste Generation
PORTLAND, Ore. — City of Roses Disposal & Recycling (COR) has entered into a multi-year agreement to be the official waste and recycling partner for Providence Park, Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns FC.
The goal set for this partnership is to not only reduce the waste stream from events at the stadium but to also have Providence Park become a catalyst for creating more sustainable event venues across the country. While stadiums, in particular, are some of the largest waste generators, the plan is to eventually put in place the processes and practices that lead to fully closed-loop, zero-waste generation.
As a leader in environmental stewardship, Portland is a prime location to launch this effort and COR is the right company to make it happen. COR will use its East Multnomah County Material Recovery Facility/Transfer Station for waste and recycling processing. COR will also explore innovative ideas and options such as upcycling organic food waste generated at the stadium for higher beneficial uses like compost on hazelnut farms, and animal feed.
In addition to working towards replicable models of environmental stewardship, COR, the Timbers, and Providence Park are also partners in creating communities where everyone is welcome. COR embraces a triple bottom line where the environment, the economy, and social equity work in harmony to create a healthier ecosystem. The owners of COR are excited about this partnership as they understand the value that sports bring to a community. “Sports are the great equalizer. Cheering on the home team brings people from every walk of life together, which is so rare today,” Alando Simpson, CEO of COR said. “At least until the final whistle blows we have a common goal of seeing our team win and maybe that bond can last outside of the stadium.”
Providence Park and the Timbers share a similar outlook on sports as evidenced by their support of soccer and their decades-long effort to use targeted sports programs and philanthropic giving to improve the lives of children and families.
