PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC midfielder Verónica Boquete was named the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 14 of the 2014 NWSL season, it was announced today.

Boquete, 27, tallied her first brace for Thorns FC and added two assists in Portland’s record-setting 7-1 victory against FC Kansas City at Providence Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Spain Women’s National Team captain finished with six points in the match, setting a new single-game club record for points (2g, 2a). Boquete became the fifth player in Thorns FC history to score a brace along with forwards Alex Morgan, Christine Sinclair and Jessica McDonald and midfielder Allie Long. Boquete is also the fourth player in club history to tally two assists in a game.

In eight matches this season (all starts), Boquete has tallied five assists, ranking her second in the league, while scoring three goals.

Today’s announcement marks the second time this season Boquete has received Player of the Week honors as she also earned recognition in Week 10 of the regular season. It is also the third time a Thorns FC player has been recognized by the league as forward Alex Morgan received the honor for Week 11.

Boquete scored her first goal of Sunday’s match in the 3rd minute, tying the record for the quickest goal scored by a Thorns FC player with a well-placed shot into the bottom right corner just inside the box and tallied a brace in the 74th minute with a penalty-kick goal.

Thorns FC face off against the Chicago Red Stars on Thursday, July 17, at Benedictine Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill.; kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. (Pacific). Portland returns to the Rose City to play host to the Boston Breakers on Sunday, July 20, at Providence Park. Sunday’s nationally televised match on ESPN2 kicks off at 2 p.m. (Pacific).

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
