PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers Academy teams took on the San Jose Earthquakes Academy and Cal Odyssey over the weekend at the adidas Timbers Training Center. Both Timbers Academy teams claimed wins over the Odyssey, as the Timbers U-18 Academy assembled an unbeaten weekend.
The Timbers U-18 Academy (2-2-2, 8pts) opened the weekend with a comeback, 2-2 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes U-18 Academy on Saturday. After conceding twice in the opening 20 minutes, the Timbers U-18s responded with two of their own in a three-minute span around the half-hour mark to level. Rolando Velazquez (Junction City, Ore.) pulled one back in the 30th minute off a cross from Issa Hassan (Beaverton, Ore.). Peter Prescott (Vancouver, Wash.) then provided the equalizer in the 33rd minute for his first goal of the season.
With a commanding performance Sunday, the Timbers U-18s defeated Cal Odyssey’s U-18 squad 3-0. Anthony Macchione (Camas, Wash.) tallied his first two goals of the season, scoring in the 26th and 54th minutes to put the home side up 2-0. Alex Segovia (Hillsboro, Ore.) notched his first strike of the season in the 63rd minute, assisted by Foster Langsdorf (Vancouver, Wash.), to cap the scoring and an unbeaten weekend for the Timbers U-18s, who have just one loss in their last four games.
The Timbers U-16 Academy (2-3-1, 7pts) had a promising start Saturday, scoring the opening goal, but fell 3-1 to the San Jose Earthquakes U-16 Academy. Davis Chimento (Sherwood, Ore.) scored his team-leading third goal of the season to give the Timbers U-16s a 1-0 lead at halftime. San Jose’s U-16s tallied all three of their goals in the second half, including the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick to secure the win.
With a 3-0 victory Sunday against Cal Odyssey’s U-16s, the Timbers U-16s snapped a run of three straight losses and captured their second win on the campaign. Sam Kirby (Tigard, Ore.) fired home his first goal of the season to lift the Timbers U-16s to an early 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. Nick Evans (Troutdale, Ore.) scored his second and third goals of the season in the 28th and 44th minutes to secure the win. Goalkeepers Miguel Martins (Terrebonne, Ore.) and Anthony Armenta (Happy Valle, Ore.) combined for the team’s second shutout.
The Timbers U-16 Academy will travel to Southern California this weekend for matches against the LA Galaxy Academy and Chivas USA Academy as part of the 2013-14 Generation adidas Cup.
