PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Timbers midfielder David Guzmán has been named to the Costa Rica Men’s National Team roster for a pair of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
Guzmán, 27, will join Costa Rica for its first qualifying match in 2017 against Mexico at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico, on March 24, beginning at 6:50 p.m. (Pacific). Four days later, Costa Rica will travel to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, to face the Honduras National Team at Estadio Francisco Morazan on March 28. The match against Honduras will kick off at 2 p.m. (Pacific). Following the Honduras match, Guzmán will rejoin the Timbers ahead of the team’s home fixture against the New England Revolution on Sunday, April 2.
Since making his senior team debut in 2010, Guzmán has earned 29 caps for Costa Rica, representing the Ticos at the 2011 Copa America, the 2011 and 2015 Gold Cup and most recently in 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
In 2017, Guzmán has started in all three of the Timbers MLS matches, scoring his first MLS goal in the team’s 4-2 win against the Houston Dynamo on March 18, helping to guide the team to a 3-0-0 record to start the season.
