Timbers defeat rival Seattle Sounders FC to extend unbeaten streak to fourth straight match

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Timbers interim head coach Jack Cassidy has been named the MLS Coach of the Matchday for Matchday 19, the league announced today. Cassidy led the Timbers to a 2-1 comeback win over Cascadia rival Seattle Sounders FC at Providence Park on Aug. 1, extending the team’s unbeaten streak to a fourth straight match (3-0-1) since taking over as interim. Additionally, defender Brandon Bye made the Team of the Matchday after notching the game-winning goal against Seattle in the 82nd minute.

Cassidy and team claiming points

In four matches at the helm for the Timbers, Cassidy collected 10 of 12 possible points, including two wins over the Sounders. Portland outscored opponents 11-5 during his interim spell, climbing five spots and into playoff position in the Western Conference table. Notably, three of Cassidy’s four matches were comeback results (2W, 1D).

Bye the hero against Sounders

Bye’s 82nd minute game-winning goal on Saturday night marked his first in Green and Gold. It also came as his first goal since Sept. 28, 2024, when he played for the New England Revolution. Bye played the full 90 minutes of the match against Seattle, completing a season-best 96% of his passes.

The Timbers will pause regular season play to host the first of three Leagues Cup matches on Thursday, Aug. 6, against Club Puebla.
