Velde’s brace secures midweek point for Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Timbers forward Kristoffer Velde has been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 25, the league announced today. The Timbers battled to a 2-2 comeback draw against St. Louis CITY SC at Providence Park on Wednesday night, and Velde equalized the match via free kick plays in both the 32nd and 89th minutes of action to rescue a point at home.
Velde, 27, notched his first MLS brace on Wednesday night, marking his seventh and eighth goals of the season. It extended his team lead in goal contributions to 17 (8G, 9A), a club-high in both categories among active Timbers. Of note, the Norwegian winger has registered seven goal contributions (4G, 3A) in Portland’s last five matches. His first half free-kick goal and second half set-piece strike marked Velde’s third and fourth goals from outside the box this season, which is tied for fourth most in MLS.
